Finding Zair

It took me a few years (and I admit I wasn't looking every day anymore) but I finally found the elusive Positively Perfect Divah Zair.

I collected the other three original PPDs over the course of maybe three years, Abrielle (left) and Diana (right) when they were selling at Walmart, and Taylor (center) a couple of years later.

But Zair was completely AWOL untiI she surprisingly turned up on eBay recently.

She had most of her original clothing thankfully (minus the shoes and the awesome yellow hat) but looked to be in good condition. Maybe her hair was a little tussled, but seriously, when would I find another Zair? So for better or worse she was soon on her way home to me.

When she arrived, I found her cloth and vinyl and clothing were indeed clean with no marks or stains (though her hair was a bit tangled).

On the other hand, she had that lovely thrift store smell, so out she went to the garage to air out for a few days.

And after a few days, when that didn't completely work, I reluctantly took her apart to air out the stuffing.

Meanwhile as long as I had her head off, I decided to wash and condition her hair; it needed it. I could see some tangly frizz among the original tight curls so I hoped conditioning and combing it would restore it a bit.

In the end, after some heavy conditioning and careful combing, the hair turned out nice--super soft and bouncy (although the curl was slightly looser). As I've said in the past, I love these dolls' hair! It's beautifully soft and surpisingly realistic for a bargain doll.

Finally, after a few more days of airing out the stuffing, Zair was ready to be whole again. At this point I had to make the decision to simply restuff her as she was, or go the extra mile and give her an armature so she could stand and pose like her Divah BFFs Abrielle, Diana, and Taylor. The fact is I knew I would eventually give her an armature anyway, so I decided to go for it.

(If you are interested in reading about the armature procedure for these dolls, check out my armature guide HERE.)

I redressed her in her original clothes, which are relatively cute, at least until I can find something else for her to wear.  With her new armature, she can probably model most standard 18" doll clothing very nicely.

I'm not too worried about tracking down her original shoes. Most my other Divahs don't wear their original shoes anyway. On the other hand, that yellow hat she wears is seriously adorbs.

I hope to make a replacement for it in the future using Taylor's hat as a model, as it seems to be in the same style as Zair's. For now I let her borrow one of the My Life As doll's beanie. She rocked it.

With clean stuffing, clean clothes, and a new armature, Zair was ready to be reunited with her PP Divah girlfriends.

The reunion also helped to answer some long standing questions I had about Zair and her similarities to Diana. Mainly, were they the same doll with just slightly different textured hair? Or did they in fact have different skin tones, as Abrielle and Taylor have? I couldn't 100% decide for sure, but I suspect they are the same.

Taylor, Zair, Abrielle, and Diana

At some point in their development, Zair and Diana seemed to have been described with different skin tones, "pecan" and "caramel" respectively; at another point, they are both listed as having caramel skin color. I'm thinking the latter may be true.

So it was a long time in coming, but I finally have the full set of the original Positively Perfect Divahs.

And while it's true that I'm actually trying to pare down my doll collection (and getting another one didn't exactly help!) I searched for Zair for too long to pass her up after finally finding her!
