Tollytots Tolly Girl

Tolly Girl dolls by Tollytots were introduced in the early 2000s and were sold at Walmart. They were actually a newer version of the dolls sold in the late 1990s, with an updated body style and new face sculpt. There were seven, maybe eight, original Tolly Girls: Jillian, Trisha, Tyra, Sunny, Quinn, Leah, and Paloma.

The Tolly Girls model was later sold by Toys R Us under the brand, adding new dolls and face sculpts to the collection, including one or two unique ones, before closing down production of the dolls after Tollytots was bought out by Jakks Pacific, who currently produces Disney-themed dolls.

Tolly Girls were affordable 18" dolls similar to Our Generation dolls (with whom they are often compared). Opinions vary, but many feel the facesculpts were done well, with lovely expressive faces and striking jewel-like eyes.

Their features were mature, like teen dolls, and realistic. They varied by skin, eye, or hair color, and hair texture.

A Tolly Girl might have special details like freckles or ringlets.

Some Tollys have two-tone hair.

Tolly Girls have inset eyes and rooted hair. Their eyes might be blue, green, or hazel-brown. Their hair might be blonde, red, brown, or black, and either straight, wavy, curly, or crimped. Their skin is either a light tan/beige, or a medium dark.

There were also Special Edition Tolly Girls that were deluxe versions and came in gold or purple boxes and wore more elaborate clothing and makeup.

The makeup on the Special Edition dolls is a bit over the top; it's definitely going for glamorous.

Most Tollys have more natural-looking face paint.

There are also some variances in the face sculpts; mostly noticeable in the shape of the mouth. Some tollys have a slightly open mouth with "pursed" lips.

There are also one or two rare face sculpts that are real stand-outs. The realism on these dolls is stunning and quite beautiful.

There are a just few searchable images of this rare African American Tolly Girl with her graceful natural features and subtle face color.

Another rare sculpt is this lovely Asian face mold, which is harder to track down than the AA sculpt. The face paint is more dramatic on this doll, and creates a lot of impact.

Some creative doll people have discovered that Tollytots dolls' strong facial structure makes for great custom Tolly Boys!

Tolly Girls have cloth and vinyl articulated bodies similar to American Girl, but the cloth torso is slimmer. Their limbs are comparable, and the angle of the legs gives them "hips," another factor that makes them look older than AG dolls. The neck is thicker and a bit shorter than some dolls. Their vinyl is softer, has a slightly flexible feel to it. The vinyl color has a slightly sallow tone, especially in the case of the Caucasian dolls. It has a "tan" quality to it.

Tolly Girls have a solid, heavy feel to them and can stand steadily.

They can share most clothing with American Girl and other standard 18" dolls, though some fitted styles may be loose at the waist. They can share shoes.

Tolly Girls have a selection of fashions from both the Tolly Girls collection and the older Friends by Tolly set, whic offers creative styles like cowgirl or gardening outfits.

Both the dolls and their clothing have been retired for a number of years, but they can still be gotten on secondary markets like eBay for fairly reasonable costs. Tolly Girls usually have an opening cost of about $10-$20 while their new in box fashions go for about $10.
