Molly P. Originals Bobby and Dylan

In 2013, Me and Molly P dolls debuted their 18" Fashion Doll collection, which included two boys, Bobby and Dylan.

They are soft-bodied articulated dolls like American Girl. Both have blue eyes and rooted hair, though Dylan is blond while Bobby is brown-haired. Bobby comes with a preppy button-up shirt, sweater, and red hooded jacket. Dylan is the rebel and wears a sweatshirt, black hooded jacket, and a brown beanie. All Molly P Fashion Dolls use same face sculpt (though it may have changed slightly since the dolls' debut).

It's unclear if Molly P's Fashion Dolls are retired; their website seems to be suspended. They are difficult to find but will sometimes show up on Amazon or other online markets. They can also be found on eBay (though often for inflated prices). Bobby shows up much more often than Dylan. Their cost can range wildly, anywhere from $25 to $125.

Heidi Ott Benjamin

Heidi Ott dolls were sold by Target in 1996 and later directly by Heidi Ott in 1999. Out of the ten historically-themed dolls, four were boys, most of which are very difficult to find today. Fortunately one of the boys, Benjamin, is fairly easy to track down on eBay or other secondary markets. He comes in a variety of themes and outfits like the other Heidi Otts. He was sold as the brother of lookalike Heidi Ott girl Beth.

The other boys, Jacob, Daniel, and Willy, are extremely rare and almost never show up on the secondary market. (In a year and a half of searching almost daily, I have seen one or two pop up only twice.) There seems to be a small amount of confusion on the internet (and from sellers) about which boy is whom. Based on a few solid sources and the age-old process of elimination, I've narrowed it down to some likely matches. (I don't guarantee them to be 100% accurate.)

Heidi Ott dolls stand about 19" tall. They have soft-standing, non articulated, tightly stuffed cloth bodies with vinyl extremities that start at the elbow and thigh. They need a little help from a doll stand (or wall) to stand. The boys come in a range of hair and eye colors from pale blond and blue eyes (Ben) to dark brown/black hair and brown eyes (Willy). Their wigged hair quality is slightly less than dolls like American Girl, but perhaps better than others. They range in price from about $10 to about $40 commonly, although their asking price is occasionally higher. Some Mint in Box dolls may command upward of $100.

Battat Collectors Lane Kids Jack

Jack was part of Battat's original Collectors Lane Kids line which preceded their current Our Generation doll collection. Jack was one of five Collectors Lane dolls, and the only boy. Jack also shares the distinction of being the only Battat 18" boy doll to date.

JACK IN DIFFERENT STARTER OUTFITS

Jack has blue eyes that tend towards "shiny" in certain light, and blond wigged hair that tends to frizz badly over time. Fortunately he can be easily re-wigged and many collectors have done so, often giving him darker hair to match his slightly tan or beige complexion. He has a cloth and vinyl articulated body like Our Generation dolls. He comes dressed in one of many different starter outfits.

Since he is retired, he can sometimes be elusive, although he does show up on secondary markets like eBay with semi-regularity. For a Jack in mint condition, the cost can sometimes range on the high side of $100, although he is frequently found in fair condition for much less. His asking price usually runs from $20 to $70.

My Pal for MY School and My Sibling Matty

My Pal | My Sibling dolls offer 18" dolls that help raise awareness for issues; autism and disabilities for My Sibling, and important themes like being thankful, promoting peace, caring for the environment, patriotism, and so forth for My Pal.

The very unique thing about My Pal | My Sibling is that they offer more boy dolls than girl dolls, the only play doll company that does so. They also offer a larger quantity of ethnic boy dolls, so if you are looking for something other than your typical fair-skinned, blue-eyed doll, My Pal | My Sibling may have it. They don't seem to offer any obviously Asian dolls, but AA, Hispanic/medium skinned, as well as Caucasian are readily available.

My Pal for Autism Awareness

MY Pal My Sibling dolls use the Lotus head and body type, also used by Today's Girl, My London Girl, and the New York Collection, among others. They are cloth and vinyl articulated, like American Girl. Like the now retired New York Collection, they are unique among other Lotus dolls in that they have open/close eyes. The dolls, many with unique, curly hair, are some of the more popular off-brands of boy dolls, and My Pal | My Sibling seem to have found a niche that works for them. They sell for about $45-$50 from the My Pal | My Sibling website.

117/18 Kathy and Grace

This is a very early Gotz sculpt that goes back to the 1970s. It was the face of blue-eyed brunette vintage Kathy, and blonde, brown-eyed vintage Grace, among others. I have no knowledge of the sculpt's name if it had one. It does seem to have been used semi-regularly between the late 1970s through the late 1980s or beyond. It can be easily found on the secondary market in a number of soft-bodied styles, usually blonde and blue-eyed.

I'm not actually convinced that all of these faces are the same sculpt; some of them have wider-set eyes than others. But they are at least related, and until I have further knowledge, I'm categorizing them all under #117/18, which is the sculpt number of the Grace doll above.

Vintage Walker

This vintage sculpt may have first been used for some of the early Gotz walking / talking dolls going back to the 1970s so I will refer to it by the name of Vintage Walker. It has some similarities to the Starshine mold, although the head seems to be larger and rounder, with a wider mouth and less of a pout. It may have preceded the Starshine mold.

It was chosen as the special "Lady Sarah" commemorative doll for the wedding of Lady Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew in 1986, and offered in both the wedding and engagement versions.

ANOTHER EARLY WALKER

The official name or mold number of this sculpt in unknown. The back of the neck usually reads "Gotz Puppe" and it has been signed Franz Gotz. It is most often found in non articulated, soft-bodied dolls of around 20" - 22". The sculpt is long retired but can be commonly found on the secondary market.

FAO Schwartz Avery and Gotz Asian Hannah

FAO Schwatz Asian Avery (by Gotz) and Gotz Asian Hannah use essentially the same Gotz Asian model. The main difference is in their hairstyle. Avery's straight black hair is worn in a chin-length bob, either with or without bangs/ fringe. Asian Hannah has much longer, wavy black hair with bangs/ fringe. They each have brown eyes and medium tan and/or light tan skin, and their face paint may vary slightly. They are slim 18" vinyl dolls.

Avery, who is now retired by FAO Schwartz, can be easily found used on the secondary market for about $30 - $60. Asian Hannah is available from the Gotz website and other online doll markets for about $130 - $150. She can also be found new on the secondary market for about the same price.

Paola Reina Mei, Lis, and Lui

Las Reinas Mei

Spanish doll manufacturer Paola Reina offers three Asian dolls from among their collections: Las Reinas (The Queens) Mei, Soy Tu (I am You) Lis, and Las Amigas (The Friends) Lui. Mei is the largest at 23.6" (60cm). Lis is in the middle at 15.7" (40cm) and little Lui is the smallest at 12.5" (32 cm).

The dolls are available in Europe and the Americas from their respective Paola Reina websites. Mei retails for about $115 (USD). Lis retails for about $60 (USD) and Lui retails for about $44 (USD). The dolls are also available from online markets like Amazon, Etsy, or eBay, though with generally inflated prices.

Hearts 4 Hearts Tipi

13" Hearts 4 Hearts Girls Tipi is a little bit unique in that she comes from Laos in South East Asia, a region which isn't often represented in Asian play dolls. She has long black hair and brown eyes, and her vinyl is light tan as opposed to the usual pale-skinned Asian doll. Her face mold in unique. H4H dolls debuted around 2011 (?) but can be difficult to find at retail stores today. They can still be found at online markets like Amazon and eBay, typically for about $40 - $80, sometimes more. They can also be purchased in used condition on secondary markets for less. Tipi in particular can be hard to find and usually costs more than the average H4H, about $50 - $125, though a diligent buyer may find her for less.

Global Friends Mariko and Mei Ling

Global Friends Mariko and Mei Ling

13" Global Friends debuted in the late 1990s with 13 (?) dolls, two of whom were Asian: Mariko from Japan, and Mei Ling from China. Both dolls have light beige skin and brown eyes. They share a common face mold with all the other Global Friends dolls. Mei Ling has long, straight black hair originally clipped into hair ornaments. Mariko's black hair is cut in a shorter, bob hairstyle. The dolls are now retired and can be difficult to get, but they will occasionally show up on secondary markets like eBay for about $30 or $70 (sometimes less).
